cement, were swept away. The Chief Storekeeper's Office was destroyed (without however loss of the books) and the foundations of the landing crane displaced. Temporary bridges were washed out of the service road to the South Tunnel Face, where the shaft (68 feet deep) was drowned out. When I visited the works on the 1st instant, the pumps were again working, but there were still 25 feet of water in the shaft. The shed erected for drilling plant and most of the coolie matsheds were swept away. At the North Tunnel Face, the shifting of the 8 horse-power boiler broke all steam connections to the pump, and the shaft (45 feet deep), from which the driving of headings had commenced, also filled with water. It is now proposed to abandon this shaft. At the North Tunnel Face, also, most of the coolie matsheds were destroyed, and part of the roof of the miners' quarters was carried away. The service road from Tide Cove to the North Tunnel Face was not much damaged, but the inside portion of the temporary jetty at Lok Lo Ha was wrecked. The Assistant Engineers' matshed bungalow at Pan Ling, between Tai Po and the Lo Fu Ferry, was much damaged but is still standing.
